Research Guide: Step 1 - Choose a Topic

Step 1 - Choose a Topic

Choosing a topic can be the most challenging part of the research process. It is important to select a topic that is both meaningful and manageable.

Step 1 - Methods

Generate Meaningful Topics:

  • Is there a particular unit of study that you enjoyed?
  • Do you have a strong opinion on a scientific, social, or political controversy?
  • Have any recent news stories piqued your interest?
  • Are you involved in an activity that you would like to explore?
  • Have you searched the library for books?
  • Have you used the resources listed on this page?

Determine if your Topic is Manageable:

  • Have you confirmed with your teacher that your topic meets the assignment requirements?
  • Can you find a variety of quality resources that relate to your topic?
  • Are you overwhelmed with resources, and cannot find focused and relevant information? Your topic may be too broad.
  • Are you having a difficult time finding any information at all? Your topic may be too narrow.

Helpful Tips to Consider:

  • Create a Google Doc journal for your assignment to keep all of your notes organized.
  • To avoid accidental plagiarism, cite your sources as you go!
