Research Guide: Step 2 - Gather Background Information

Step 2 - Gather Background Information

When you gather background information you will gain an understanding of the major concepts and viewpoints related to your topic. Your initial search results will also help you determine if your topic is manageable, or if you may have to adjust your topic or search strategies.

Step 2 - Methods

Gather Background Information:

  • Write down everything that you already know about your topic.
  • Get an overview of topic concepts and vocabulary by searching reference resources, such as encyclopedias, handbooks, or textbooks.
  • As you are exploring reference resources, keep a lookout for lists of suggested resources that you can utilize later in the research process.
  • Begin to explore specific aspects of your topic, including terminology, people, events, dates, etc.
  • Are you finding relevant resources or should you consider revising your search strategies?
  • While you may not use or cite Wikipedia for research, it is permitted during this step as a way to develop a list of topic keywords, issues, and concepts. The video below explains the best practices for using Wikipedia for background research.

Helpful Tips to Consider:

  • Continue using your Google Doc journal to record all your background researching notes.
  • Analyze the information that you find, as this will help you to refine your topic.
  • Record important keywords, issues, and concepts related to your topic that you can use them later when you research using databases.
  • To avoid accidental plagiarism, remember to cite your sources as you go!
